Agile/Scrum
Agile and Scrum are often used interchangeably in many contexts, making it unclear what the difference is. The world around us is changing faster than ever. To keep up with these changes, Agile working offers an effective solution for many organizations. But what are the Scrum and Agile methodologies, and how do they work?
What is Agile?
The literal translation of Agile is “flexible” or “adaptable.” Agile is therefore an approach in which flexibility is the main focus. A project team working with an Agile approach assumes that circumstances will change during the project. They are able to respond to these changes and ensure that the final result is not put at risk.
Agile is a suitable way of working for project teams. The approach enables teams to quickly adapt a project to changing circumstances. When customer requirements or situations change, teams can respond rapidly. In other words, Agile embraces change. This is in contrast to a traditional project approach, where a project team tries to define and fix the process as much as possible in advance.
Is Agile suitable for my organization?
Agile is not only suitable for simple business applications, but also for complex long-term projects. This is because Agile divides projects into smaller parts, making them more manageable and easier to oversee. An important condition is that the organization has an open and communicative culture.
Agile working contributes to the flexibility and responsiveness of an organization. The Agile method works best in environments with little bureaucracy. In an Agile work environment, knowledge sharing is encouraged, as well as creativity and finding solutions independently. The initiative lies not with management, but with the employees.
What is scrum?
Scrum is an Agile method that helps project teams deliver work more productively and respond quickly to changes. The Scrum methodology supports adapting to rapid market developments and changing customer needs. The core principle of Scrum is: try, learn, and then decide how to proceed. Scrum can be applied to any type of project or service. It works with different roles: the Product Owner, Scrum Master, and Development Team. Each role has its own responsibilities.
Key characteristics of Scrum:
Simple
Flexible
Collaboration
Communication with stakeholders
What does Agile/Scrum offer organizations?
Agile is not a single specific method, but a collection of methods. The most well-known method is Scrum. Scrum is easy to apply because there is very little overhead. A Scrum team is self-organizing and involves every team member in a project, as well as the customer.
Large organizations are generally less flexible. A plan or design often has to pass through several departments and management layers before it can be executed. As a result, the organization can become slow. Scrum is a framework, while Agile is a mindset. To survive as a company, you need to be adaptable. Agile working is a continuous process of improvement.
Lean, Agile or Scrum? A good combination… ;-)
You might think that Lean, Agile, and Scrum are three different methods and that an organization has to choose one specific approach. The opposite is true: these methods overlap significantly and complement each other. The key is to choose the approach that best fits the organization. We are happy to help you with this!
